The symptoms of cancer are many, and they are often the same as many other conditions. While there is not one specific symptom that is indicative of cancer, some of the symptoms associated with cancer are listed below. Keep in mind that these signs are generalized and not specific for any particular type of cancer.

  1. Lethargy- cancer ( as well as many other conditions)  can zap your pet of energy. Walks may get shorter, interest in toys may decrease and more time may be spent sleeping.
  2. Shortness of breath- your pet may breath harder while doing simple tasks like walking or even while laying down.
  3. Certain cancers, mainly lymphomas, can cause enlargement of one or all of the lymph nodes.
  4. Pale gums- a normal dog will have bright pink gums. When sick with cancer or other diseases, they can become pale  and tinged with blue or white.
  5. Change in appetite- generally speaking, a dog with cancer may have a decrease in appetite and will only eat  very desirable foods as the  regular diet becomes less appealing.

Please remember these are very non-specific signs of cancer. Your veterinarian will be the one to help you decipher these signs, and determine whether or not your dog has cancer.
